Because of its arid road and scenic trail, Ladakh has become one of the most popular travel destinations. And if you like taking on new challenges, Ladakh might already be on your bucket list.

Ladakh will compel you to fully experience the region whether it is your first or second visit. With its colorful landscapes and snow-capped mountains, Ladakh passes offer some of the best views of Leh that will be remembered for a lifetime.

It is said that in order to remember the best road trips in Ladakh, you must first taste its soil. A bike tour is the best way to experience Ladakh’s roads. It has recently come to light that tourists from all over the world are riding bicycles to this enchanted location.

The months of June through September are ideal for visiting Leh Ladakh. During the winter, the majority of routes remain closed. Here’s a comprehensive list of everything you should look into before embarking on your trip.

#1 – Prepare mentally

Even though it should go without saying, I’d like to stress it. You must mentally prepare yourself for the weather in these locations. After all, mountainous terrain is frequently unpredictable. Prepare yourself mentally for riding in the rain, chilly snow, and scorching sun.

#2 – Prepare physically

Despite the fact that it is a bike ride, it is recommended that you be in good physical condition before embarking on the journey. Maintain a regular exercise routine and work to improve your cardiovascular endurance. Begin jogging every day and work your way up to completing 5 kilometers in 35 to 40 minutes.

If you have any health concerns, stay at home or consult a doctor before embarking on this high-altitude adventure.

#3 – Be Confident

Be confident in your abilities and riding style. Avoid anything flashy or unusual for the trip. Simply be aware of your driving abilities and weaknesses. Make a note of anyone who accuses you of driving too fast around curves. Don’t drive too fast in the Highlands. You will not enjoy the journey if you drive quickly. It is designed for cruising. Follow your own pace.

Most importantly, resist the temptation to purchase a larger bike simply because everyone else is. Choose a bike that you are comfortable riding. A motorcycle with at least a 150 CC engine is required, however.

#4 – Don’t be overconfident

There are several difficult rides on the way. You will see many streams depending on when you visit. Before crossing the creek, take a moment to pause, reflect, and decide on the best course of action. If you’re not sure, watch someone cross the stream before you follow them.

Allowing cars or jeeps to cross the creek will allow you to gauge its depth. For long rides, take a break every 60 minutes and drink water; in the summer, drink ORS.

#5 – Carry your own medical kit

Because it will be difficult to find a doctor along the way, it is recommended that you bring a medical kit with you. Below is a list I compiled, but please consult a doctor first.

Diamox 10-15 tablets ( AMS )

Crocin 10 tabs ( Fever )

Combiflam 10 tabs ( Pain Killer )

Digene ( Acidity )

Lomopalm ( Loose motion )

Crepe bandage

Band-aid 10 strips

Cotton roll

Moov / Volini spray

Antiseptic cream like Boro plus

Sunscreen 30 SPF and above

Wet wipes/toilet rolls

Moisturizer like Vaseline

ORS 10 packs

#6 – Prepare your bike

If you ride your own personal bike, make sure it is equipped with everything you require. Make sure your bike is serviced before your trip, and ride for at least 200 to 300 kilometers after the service.

  • Ask your mechanic to install an extra clutch cable and an extra accelerator cable so that you can simply switch them if something goes wrong.
  • Carry chain lube and use it every 400 km.
  • Anti-puncture fluid to the tube.
  • Add a second carrier so that it can hold at least one 5-liter gasoline can.
  • USB portable charger (Optional)
  • Carry at least two bungee cords. Bring a rope just in case.
  • Always keep a foot or electric air inflator.
  • Keep a few photocopies of valid driving licenses, RC books, and emission test (PUC) papers at all times.

#7 – Other things to carry (Checklist)

Carry 2 big plastic bags to cover your luggage, and a few small ones to keep your gadgets safe. Please DO NOT dispose of them in the mountains. Dispose of them in the dustbins only.

Powerbank (As you may not get charging points everywhere)

Torch (Mobile torch would do)

Thermals 2 pairs and a sweater

Cotton socks 3-4 pairs

Woolen socks 1-2 pairs at night

Woolen gloves 1-2 pairs

Riding gloves 1 pair

Balaclava

Goggles are must

Raincoats

Riding jacket

Waterproof shoes are a must

Protective gear like knee caps and elbow caps are recommended

Dry fruits to munch on the way

At least 2 water bottles of 1 liter each.

#8 – Transporting your bike

However, if you choose to travel through Manali, you must ship your bike to Chandigarh, and if you choose to travel through Kashmir, you must ship it to Jammu. If you prefer a cargo service, some companies will arrange to transport your bike to Manali.

#9 – Permits

The most crucial step is to prepare all of your permissions before you go on your journey. Permits are required for Ladakh. Permits are available online here https://www.lahdclehpermit.in/register-as-domestic.

Keep a day free for permits in any situation. Also, keep 2 days of acclimatization in Leh, so your entire trip will be smooth.

#10 – Postpaid SIM card

In case you were unaware, prepaid phones do not work in Jammu and Kashmir due to government law. Carry a postpaid sim card if you need to connect to the outside world! I had an Airtel sim card with me, which worked in most areas.

I hope this was helpful! Please leave a comment if you have any questions or want to add anything!

Bonus Tip

Ideal Duration For A Bike Trip

An ideal duration for a Leh Ladakh bike tour would be 15 days or more, depending on a variety of factors such as the route you’ve taken, your overall schedule, and, most importantly, the weather conditions. This duration is also appropriate for a Manali to Leh bike trip from Delhi.

In my blog, I discuss how to plan a Ladakh bike trip route.
